Formula One's decision to award double points for the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix—the final race of the season—was met with a mixture of disbelief, horror and dismay among fans. The system was implemented with the unanimous approval of every team on the grid and championed by promoter Bernie Ecclestone. The FIA stated it was brought in "to maximise focus on the championship until the end of the campaign."
