Rookie Alexander Rossi bested a field of veterans with a terrific fuel conservation strategy to win the 100th edition of the Indianapolis 500. Rossi remained out on the track while the rest of the leaders dropped down to pit road to receive a splash of fuel. The driver of the No. 98 car cruised to the checkered flag and ran out of fuel shortly after. He had to be towed off the track as he ran out of gas just after winning the race.  Carlos Munoz, who fought for first place over the final 10 laps before heading to pit road, secured a second-place finish.
