Racing to Recovery: Hmiel Continues to Recover 17 Days Later; Update 8:53PM

It’s been 17 days since Shane Hmiel’s USAC crash and since then, he’s been through a lot. Within 48 hours of the wreck, Hmiel went through two successful surgeries: one for a broken back and the other for a broken neck. He also fought his way through a battle with pneumonia. Lastly, he went through a third successful surgery on Monday to repair a torn artery in his neck. Today at 3 p.m., Hmiel will go through yet another procedure: this time to insert a tube temporarily in his neck, known as a trach. The trach will be there to help him breath while allowing the doctors to remove the vent.
